Ingredients

1 ½ cups butter, melted
1 cup granulated sugar
¼ teaspoon baking powder
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon almond extract
¾ teaspoon salt
3 ½ cups flour

Directions

Preheat oven to 375°F. In a deep bowl, beat butter with a mixer on medium to high for 30 seconds. Add granulated sugar and baking powder. Mix until blended. Break an egg, vanilla, and almond extract until combined. Mix in salt and as much of the flour as you can with the mixer. Stir in any remaining flour.

On a mildly floured surface, roll out the mixture to 1/8- to 1/4-inch thickness. Use 2- to 3-inch cookie cutters to cut dough into desired shapes. Arrange cutouts 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for eight minutes or until the edges are firm, yet not brown. Remove and cool on wire rack.

Patchwork

Prepare dough as directed previously. Separate dough into a couple of portions and add food coloring to pieces as desired. Roll out each section as instructed. With a small cookie cutter, cut out shapes from various colors. Cut out and bake as directed. If desired, mix one teaspoon vodka with 1/2 teaspoon luster dust. Brush chilled cookies with luster dust.
Painted

Prepare dough as directed in Step 1. Roll out dough as directed. Blend a few drops of red or pink food coloring, one tablespoon of water, and one egg. Using a small pastry brush, brush dough with swipes of color. Cut out and bake as instructed. If you wish, you can mix one teaspoon of vodka with 1/2 teaspoon of luster dust. Cover the cookies with luster dust, as per your wishes.

Striped

Prepare cookie dough as directed, then divide the dough into four identical portions. Using food coloring, dye pieces with various shades of red, leaving one piece of dough plain. Roll out dough parts and cut into strips of differing widths.

Brush with egg white and sprinkle with dyed sugars, pressing lightly to adhere. Arrange pieces next to each other and push together; carefully roll over with rolling pin to seal. Cut out and bake as directed. If desired, mix one teaspoon vodka with 1/2 teaspoon luster dust. Finish with a stroke of luster dust mixture.
